Most pests that we deal with are seasonal. However, there are some pests that tend to be a problem all year round – one such pest is the German Cockroach.
As you can see in the photos below, taken at a unit in Petersham NSW, German Cockroaches will exploit any place to live. Even DVD covers are not safe, especially when DVD’s and similar items are kept on top of a fridge or other appliance.
Most of the pest cockroach species tend to be problematic in the warmer months. This is due to the environments in which they live and breed. The larger species of cockroach tend to live in roof voids, wall cavities, under houses, external areas and the like. These areas are subject to large temperature variations in the cooler months of the year. Their reproductive capabilities are greater in the warmer months. Whereas the German Cockroach lives in areas where temperatures remain constant and food is always available.
Each egg case contains 30-40 cockroach eggs. Newly hatched nymphs can reach maturity in as little as 6-12 weeks and adults can live up to 6 months and there can be up to 4 new generations per year. This means that potentially in ideal conditions on after a few generations there can be literally tens of thousands of German Cockroaches form a single breeding pair. This can and does happen if left untreated – we see extreme infestations on a regular basis.
Where are cockroaches found?
German Cockroaches preferred environment is within buildings. They have become extremely effective in exploiting environments which humans live. They need to be very close to their food source, so the kitchen is a very good place for them to live and are commonly found in domestic and commercial kitchens, pantries, storerooms, food handling and garbage areas, any area where food and water is easily available. They tend to hide in small cracks and crevices in kitchen cupboards, below benches, inside and around items like stoves, sinks, fridges, water heaters, dishwashers microwaves and just about any other appliance found in a common kitchen. Appliances are ideal as they are warm and provide they perfect environment for this cockroach to reach its breeding potential. Often we see the fridge of the kitchen the most infested area as the motor provides a lot of heat of the dishwasher this provides a lot of warmth also.
Due to the fact that they are so good at exploiting any environment which humans inhabit and that they breed at a rapid rate they can be difficult to effectively control. Most do it yourself treatments will usually not work. To control this pest you need to have a thorough understanding of its habits and access to high quality products to control them with. This being the case it is best left to a professional pest manager to control this pest for you.
