With the warm conditions Sydney has been receiving on the back of this winter we are starting to see an emergence of pests a early in the season.
Customers have already begun calling our office to have their houses treated for spiders. Generally around spring time spiders will start to build in numbers as warmer conditions start to bring out more insects for spiders to eat. With the warm weather we have received recently, this is starting to happen earlier than expected.
Where do spiders live?
Spiders will build webs around the external walls of your home, under eaves, on fascia’s, gutters, trees and plants in your garden – basically anywhere advantageous to them catching insect meals. The most common spider encountered around homes in Sydney is known as the Black House Spider. These spiders make webs around the external areas of the home itself. As populations grow they will be start to be seen internally around windows or commonly cornices.
How do you get rid of spiders?
To control this spider and most other webbing spiders the treatment involves both chemical and non-chemical means.
After we complete a site assessment, which the technician completed prior to any treatment to identify all the areas that need to be treated, the external area is where we usually start. The entire surface area of external walls is treated. This ensures that all spiders and seldom seen spiderlings that will be on the walls. Sometimes a wall may look like there are no spiders on it, especially brick walls, once treated they can be crawling with spiderlings that were too small and well blended to be seen when they’re not moving. Eaves, guttering, fascia’s are treated. Treatment is applied carefully around windows and if applied correctly and carefully will not run or mark windows.
Is the treatment harmful?
The chemicals we apply will not harm plants. The products that will be used in this treatment are very low in toxicity and generally have no smell. If spiders are a problem inside your home, we will always look for non-chemical methods of control or removal first. Spiders can be removed and controlled internally simply by vacuuming or brushing the spiders down. If the infestation is high certain products registered by law to be used inside homes safely will be used. If required and infestations are quite high, roof voids, wall cavities and sometimes sub-floors may also need to be treated.
