Hidden Housemates – The Huntsman Spider

September 9, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

The Huntsman Spider – The Facts

You’re driving along and you open the sun visor. You’re cleaning at home and bump a painting hanging on the wall. Suddenly, out runs a huge, hairy spider. Australia’s huntsman spiders are the stuff of myths and nightmares.

But these are also the most interesting of their family and deserve their place in the pantheon of Australian wildlife.

I study the behavioural ecology of these remarkable spiders. Elsewhere in the world I don’t tell people that I study spiders for a living, but I confess that in Australia I do brag a little about being a huntsman specialist.

First, let’s talk numbers: there are currently 1,207 species of huntsman spider in the family Sparassidae, out of the 45,881 described spider species worldwide. It is estimated that 155 huntsman spider species are found throughout Australia.

Of those, approximately 95 species are found only in Australia. All of these are probably descended from a single common ancestor that immigrated from Papua New Guinea or elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Big, and fast

Huntsmen are big spiders. Australia has a few relatively small species, such as the tiny (non-endemic) and amazingly camouflaged lichen spider, Pandercetes gracilis. But many of the endemics are sizeable animals, which can weigh 1-2 grams and may be as big as the palm of your hand.

Lichen spider, Pandercetes gracilis, from Queensland. Linda S. Rayor

The world’s second-largest species, the massive golden huntsman, Beregama aurea, from tropical Queensland, weighs over 5.5 grams. An adult’s forelegs may stretch 15cm and they lay egg sacs the size of golf balls.

Anyone who has chased a leggy huntsman knows that they are exceptionally fast. We have been measuring the running speed of the endemic huntsman species.

The top speed demons are both sizeable animals from tropical Queensland, Holconia hirsuta and Beregama aurea. These run 42 and 31 body lengths per second, respectively. Compare this to the world-record-holding human, Usain Bolt, who runs at a sluggish 5.2 body lengths per second.

These are some of the fastest spiders recorded in the world. The slowpokes, the rotund but colourful badge huntsman (Neosparassus species), run only 16 body lengths per second.

Huntsmen are long-lived for spiders, with most living for about 2.5 years. Although some other primitive spiders (such as tarantulas) can live up to 20 years, most other spiders live less than a year.

All huntsman spiders are active at night, emerging from their retreats to forage for insects and other invertebrates, and occasionally small vertebrates. They are ambush predators, generally sitting and waiting for prey to come close before running and leaping on it.

Huntsmen don’t use webs, but use a combination of vibrations and vision to locate their prey. Consider the huntsman a small workforce of natural insect exterminators in your house and garden.

During the day, most huntsman prefer to rest in retreats under bark, crevices or other protected areas. This is why so many people encounter the spiders under the sun visors of their cars or behind curtains in their homes, because those are perfect tight spaces for a sleepy spider.

Depending on where you live, different huntsman species tend to wander inside. In Canberra, I have no idea where the medium-sized Isopedella pessleri actually live in the wild, because they are most often caught indoors.

The family that preys together, stays together

In order to mate with virgin females, male huntsman often search out females that are not quite mature and guard them for long periods. All huntsman females are attentive mothers who actively guard their egg sacs and new-born offspring for around three weeks. For most huntsman species, these are the only social interactions they experience in their entire lives.

Holconia insignis adult female guarding an egg sac. Linda S. Rayor

But the social huntsman, Delena cancerides, lives in complex family groups up to 150 strong, led by a dominant matriarch. A single mum establishes a retreat under bark of a dead tree. Her offspring from one to four clutches remain with her until they reach sexual maturity at almost a year old. Peeling off bark to find a family of these spiders can be quite a shock.

These social huntsman aren’t found in our homes, although I’ve heard of them establishing colonies under window shutters. One long-lived colony was in a backyard where the bark retreat had been affixed in place by a laundry line.

Our research shows that having older siblings in the group brings big payoffs to younger animals, as they can share prey with their more capable older siblings.

Conflict and cooperation in Australian huntsman spiders.

Why should large spiders remain at home with mum and siblings, when they can clearly fend for themselves? It turns out that there simply aren’t enough suitable under-bark retreats for D. cancerides to occupy. We find that, in most habitats, sufficiently large retreats are rare.

As a result, there is strong competition among D. cancerides for each retreat, and larger females can displace smaller females. We believe that by remaining in the protected shelter of home until they are young adults, the spiders are larger and more competitive in the battle over bark retreats, which are an absolute necessity for raising their own young.

The social huntsman spiders, Delena cancerides, are found under the bark of dead trees. The mother (on the left) may have four clutches of young who remain with her until they reach sexual maturity. This means that spiders of all sizes interact with each other through their development. Linda S. Rayor

Don’t throw a wobbly and hurt a huntsman

What should you do if you do find a big spider in your car or living room? First, get a grip! She isn’t going to hurt you.

Second, find a take-away container, scoop the spider into the container and release it outside. Huntsman spiders almost never bite humans since they rely on speed to escape most predators. When they do bite, most bites are quick defensive nips without injecting venom.

In 14 years of studying Aussie huntsman spiders, I’ve handled many thousands of individuals and been bitten only 11 times when I (mostly) deserved it. Their fangs are big enough to break skin, but the venom rarely has much effect.

An exception is the badge huntsman. This is reputed to have a more potent venom, so simply use a container to move them.

Treasure your huntsman spiders. They deserve a place alongside koalas and kangaroos as iconic Australian wildlife.

Ant Control in Ryde – Sydney

August 31, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Ants Invade Sydney

We haven’t really had much of a winter this year in Sydney and Greater Sydney.

The temperatures in July were amongst the warmest on record.

We’re now at the back end of the winter and are heading very fast towards spring.

In the pest industry, we’re now starting to see an increase in different types of pest activity that may not have been so prominent over the last couple of months.

Yesterday, we went to a home in the suburb of Ryde. The customer had been experiencing a bad ant problem in the kitchen.

No surprise that when we got there, ants were everywhere.

At some point in life, most people in Australia have experienced ant problems such as pictured, where ants are literally everywhere.

ant control ryde sydney

When black ants decide to invade your home there can be literally thousands of them. They get into everything.

You spend a lot of time and money using household sprays and baits which you can get from a supermarket or hardware store but you seem to get nowhere with your ant control. You may kill several hundred, but in a few days there’s several hundred more.

Ant Control – Call Amalgamated Pest Control

This is what we find many people do, and this particular customer of ours did exactly that.

Eventually, she conceded defeat to these ants and called in Amalgamated Pest Control.

The thing with household sprays is, they’re going to kill ants without a doubt. The solution to properly controlling ants relies on knowledge, good products and the right equipment to get products where they need to be.

ant control sydney

Successful ant control relies on finding their nesting areas and treating these areas directly. Often they can be difficult to find and even more difficult to get the right product into.

Where baits are going to be used, any bait of the shelf may not be suitable for every species of ant. Baits are made to suit the feeding habits of different ant species. Feeding a protein based bait to an ant that prefers sugars is not going control your problem.

Other than directly targeting the problem we always provide preventative management to the property to stop future ant infestations from occurring in your home.

Service Warranty – An Essential for Ant Control

At Amalgamated Pest Control, we offer you a 12 month Service Warranty on household ants. We provide such an effective treatment that we can safely say that if over the next 12 months if the ants come back, so will we.

With a 12 Month Service Warranty in mind, if you have an ant problem now, you’ll be better off in the long run calling us to control it for you.

Given the costs of products you can buy, the time it takes you to clean away dead or live ants every other day and the amount of food items you’re probably throwing away due to ant contamination.

sydney ant control

A lot of people believe that they should wait until it gets hotter to carry out pest control. We think, why wait? We provide a 12 month service warranty on our ant treatments and other pests.

The best time to get your home treated is now.

Prepare your home and your family for spring so that ants and other types of pests will not be problem in your home in the coming weeks and months.

Rodent Control in Sydney

August 9, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Rodents Control in Sydney (Menai)

We have received a lot of calls for rodent control in the last few weeks.

Last month our Office received a phone call from a customer in Sydney’s Sutherland area.

The customer reported she has been hearing scratching noises in her attic for a few months but never took much notice until the noises got louder and more regular.

Our technician attended the customer’s property in Menai and after a discussion with the home owner and a quick look around the attic, it was made very clear that there was a rodent infestation.

Like most attics, it was full of boxes with the customer’s stored items.

The technician then went to work and assessed the entire attic for activity.

It was a complete shock to the customer when she was shown the amount of activity her home had. She never realised that there was a rodent problem on the scale that was discovered. She thought she only had “a little mouse problem”.

Rats are responsible for causing damage through gnawing. It some cases there gnawing have been responsible for house fires.

Their numbers have been known to grow if left untreated to damaging property as they go. This was evident to our customer’s horror and disappointment when our technician showed her first hand the rodent damage of property, belongings, food and other goods.

As all three photos below show how rats have eaten through a storage box filled with our customer’s shoes.

Not only have they gnawed through the box but they have also gnawed right through her shoes.

The  customer was disappointed as she knew there may be rodents is her roof but always dismissed it thinking it was only a minor issue as she had never seen one.

Luckily she called Amalgamated Pest Control before they caused further damaging by chewing on electrical wires, fixtures and furnishings and other items that could prove to be very costly.

Commonly we receive phone calls from customers with a similar stories, and are often shocked when they see firsthand what these pests can do.

Bedbug Treatments in Sydney

July 26, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Bedbug Treatments

Last month, Amalgamated Pest Control received a phone call from an extremely concerned and upset customer from a unit complex in Western Sydney.

Our customer was fairly sure that her unit had become infested by Bedbugs.

Every morning she was waking up itchy with welts on her body. It took her a few days to realise that this could be a pest problem.

Some bedbug facts

Bedbugs are a very cryptic pest. They spend the majority of their lives hiding in cracks or cervices around the area where their food source – warm blooded mammals as they sleep.

They only really venture out when the host is immobile and sleeping.

A lot of the time, the unlucky occupant of a bedbug infested room won’t see the bedbugs until an infestation becomes quite serious. This habit is one strength to this pest’s survival but ironically a great weakness that we, as pest managers exploit during the control process.

For detailed information you can download our Bedbug Brochure here.

Help from Amalgamated Pest Control with bedbugs

Our technician visited our customers unit that afternoon in Merrylands.

The bedbug infestation was quickly identified. Our customer was baffled as to how her unit had become infested with bedbugs.

After a brief chat she told our technician that she’d recently been overseas visiting family. It’s highly likely that she brought a few hitchhikers back through customs with her in her suitcase.

The main way bedbugs find their way into your home is through your luggage after a trip overseas or stay in a hotel or hostel.

We’ve even treat bedbugs on buses, planes, cinemas and restaurants. Anywhere where people are immobile for a period of time can be susceptible to bed bug infestation.

How do you know if you have Bedbugs?

If you suspect you have a bedbug problem, you can start by looking at your bed framing, mattress, bed and pillow covers, walls and skirting behind your bed, your bedhead and bedside drawers.

In a home, these are the places most likely for the origins of an infestation. When looking at these items, you need to look for evidence of spots of blood.

The pictures below are from the property in Merrylands showing the blood spotting you need to look for.

bedbug treatments sydney

sydney bedbug treatments

Another place to look for cracks and crevices around you bedroom in the immediate vicinity of your bed or actually in and around your bed.

If you do this with a bright torch, you will see bedbugs hiding in these cracks, waiting for you to go to sleep.

The piping on a mattress is a favoured place for bedbugs to hide.

How Amalgamated Pest Control treat Bedbugs?

There’s no ‘quick fix’ in relation to proper bedbug control.

They are resistant to a lot of pesticides, they have a rapid breeding cycle and they hide really well.

The best thing you can do is contact a professional pest manager. It might not be the cheapest option straight up but in the long term, it will be.

Bedbug control relies on one thing – an extremely thorough inspection.

Amalgamated Pest Control will undertake a few different processes when controlling bedbugs, both non-chemical and chemical.

The reason why an inspection is crucial is because you need to

  • identify every hiding place in the home that they are using
  • identify where all the live bugs are and where all of their eggs are placed.

Failure to remove all eggs and all bugs will mean the treatment will not be successful.

A single pregnant female bedbug can re-populate to thousands within months.

This photo below shows one of our bedbug specialists using a non-chemical method of control.

bedbug control sydney

This method of control uses a specialised vacuum tool designed to vacuum the live bedbugs and eggs. This is not an ordinary home vacuum, it’s designed so that once the bugs are inside the vaccumm, they cannot get out.

Once we have removed as many eggs and live bedbugs a possible, then we apply products directly into cracks and crevices to control and bugs that may remain.

To the customers delight, our technician then revisited the site a couple more times over a couple of weeks, to make sure there all bedbug activity had been controlled.

Our customer couldn’t be happier with the treatment and has enjoyed bite free night ever since.

Concerned about bedbugs or other pests?

If you believe you have a bedbug problem, don’t wait!

The longer it takes you to contact a professional, the longer you’ll be living with these bugs and the more costly it will become in the future.

Rodents Active in Sydney This Winter

June 21, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Rodents are very active in Sydney

Winter is here and so are the rodents.

“Rodent season” – as known in the industry – is here.

Just like you and I, rats and mice are looking to be nice and warm, unfortunately this means moving indoor to our homes.

Our homes make prefect nesting grounds as there is plenty of food, water and with most homes now with insulation.

Recent rain in Sydney hasn’t helped, as our team are taking an increase of phone calls/bookings more than ever before from concerned customers across all areas of Sydney wanting rodent treatment and or suspicion of rodents in there family homes.

1 in 3 calls coming through right now is for rodents.

Southwest Sydney is just one area, where our customer service team has received an influx of calls from residential home owners wanting rodent treatment. This is due to of course the cooler weather, rain but also due to the vast amount of land development around the area are driving rodents into our homes.

If you are seeing droppings in your homes or hear scratching in the walls and roof, it is likely this time of year that unwelcome guests have made your home there’s.

Most recently one of our technicians visited a family home in Harrington grove, Southwest Sydney, where the home owner gave reports of starching noises in the roof of his home.

Upon the technician’s assessment of the property and speaking to the customer, we quickly identified rodent activity. The surprise of the customer came when our technician showed the level of activity and damage that rodents can cause.

The photo below shows rodents eating through the sarking in a roof void to gain assess into the property where they find warm places to nest.

The next photo shows rodents nest in and around insulation batts

What many customers do not know, is that rats can cause a lot of damage to our homes.

They are known to gnaw on electrical wires, which could potentially cause fires.

Our technician went to work placing tamper proof rodent bait boxes to the roof void of the home.  Three stations were installed into the roof, in around where rodent activity evidence was most seen.

Our technician then with all our rodent services did a follow up visit 7 to 10 days after.

To the delight of the customer and his family the bait was being consumed by the rodents and that there has been no more scratching noises from this roof.

Termite Treatments in Balmain – Sydney

June 2, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Are Termites in your home?

termite inspections sydney

What the customer found when moving stored items

We have been receiving a number of phone calls recently for termite inspections and termite treatments for Sydney homes.

Last week our office received a phone call from a concerned customer who had found something strange while moving some old stored items.

The customer called us very concerned thinking that he may have termites. We were able to get one of our technicians out to the site who conducted a timber pest inspection and confirmed the client had indeed an termite infestation.

The customer was both surprised and disappointed. He was surprised as he thought there were no termites in close to Sydney’s CDB and disappointed that he had never had an inspection because of this.

It might not look like much, but the picture shows a brick wall and those brown lines you can see are termite mud leads. It’s a tunnel they build themselves to protect themselves from the outside environment.

Here you can see termite damage to the door frame leading into the cellar.

termite treatments sydney

Termite damage to cellar door frame

Once we inspected  the roof void we found that there was also a lot of damage there also.

In the picture below you can see what looks like a big ball of mud, that’s been constructed by the termites attacking the home.

termite inspections sydney

Termite damage in the ceiling

The termites in this home had been active for some time.

After we completed our termite inspection we were able to gain a good understanding of the activity and the work involved in control.

How much does it cost for a Termite Treatment?

Customers often ask us how much is it to kill termites? The answer to that will vary.

We need to determine the species of termite, the extent of the activity and also the construction method of the structure.

This is all done during a timber pest inspection.

Amalgamated Pest Control – Termite Treatment to the rescue

We formulated a Property Management Plan for our customer giving him all the possible treatment methods available to control these termites in this structure.

The good news is that this home is well on its way to being termite free.

How often should you get a Termite Inspection?

Timber Pest Inspections should be done on an annual basis unless otherwise recommended to be done more frequently due to conditions or geographical location of your property. It’s crucially important that these are done.

All too often we see  customers who have not had one carried out for many years. By the time they realise they have a problem, termites have usually caused thousands of dollars of damage.

Having regular termite inspections will pick up activity before they have a chance to cause significant structural damage.

Rodent Control – Sydney

May 11, 2016 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Rodent Control – Sydney and South West

Rodent Control SydneyIt’s come to the colder time of year once again. Just as we start getting used to putting on the air conditioner, it’s almost time to start switching on the heater.  It’s also time to worry about rodent control.

It’s a good thing that many of our homes are well insulated. Our roof cavities are full of insulation, our walls are also well insulated. This is what makes our homes cool in summer and warm in winter.

Unfortunately there are some unwelcome guests that will visit our homes over the next few months for a quick feed or maybe a drink whom may never leave.

Just like humans, rodents such as the Roof Rat, Norway Rat and House Mouse are mammals. They hate the cold weather just as much as we do and it’s this time of year that the Pest Industry refers to as ‘Rodent Season’

Rodents want to continue breeding in the colder months, so to do that effectively they need to be where it’s nice and warm.

That nice warm place is usually your home. Not only is your home warm but it also has two extremely important means of survival. Food and Water.

All suburban and city areas of Sydney have rats and mice.

Wherever there is human habitation and access to water – there will be rats and mice. Humans are essential to the survival of rats and mice. Our rotting rubbish is their delicacy. So don’t think your place is not susceptible to an invasion of these small mammals this winter. Rodents are targeting all homes this season.

What you can do about rodent control

There are some things that you can do around the home to reduce the likelihood of rodent infestations at your place, and it’s a great idea to do them now!

  • Check your garbage bins to ensure they seal properly closed and never overflow them. In our line of work the one contributing factor in 78% of all infestations. Poor garbage storage or broken garbage bins are often the beginnings of some of the worst rodent problems we’ve seen. Give rodents, especially rats the respect they deserve and don’t underestimate for a second the importance of keeping your waste secured.
  • Keep all food inside your home in good sealed containers. Bearing in mind that rats can chew through timbers and other dense materials, plastic might not cut it in the event of an infestation. Glass containers are great. Whatever containers you store food in, keep them well sealed.
  • If you have pets, ensure that their food is well sealed in glass or metal containers. Only put out what your pet will eat. Rats and Mice love dog cat food, bird seed etc.
  • Look at your externals of your home. If you have tree branches or similar touching or overhanging your home, get them cut away. These will provide rats with a literal bridge onto your home. Other shrubs and the like against your home need to be kept trimmed.
  • Dense foliage around your home provides good hiding/nesting and a virtual spring board to the next stage, living in your home. Keep your gardens free of unnecessary debris.
  • Organic waste is another major attractant and great food source for rodents. If you have organic waste – it should be well sealed in metal.
  • Try to stop them getting in by proofing your home. If you can see areas where rats might get in, try to seal. Where plumbing enters the building, install flanges. It’s always a good idea to install a quality rodent proof gutter guard. Look at the gaps under your entry doors, install a seal at the bottom to stop rodent entry.

We’ve currently been doing a lot of rodent control right around Sydney, from the South West to the North West and into the City. There are a lot of rodents around at the moment and it looks like it’s going to be a busy rodent season for Amalgamated Pest Control this year.

Avoid hitch-hikers this holiday season!

December 9, 2015 by Amalgamated Pest Control Team

Over the next few weeks, many of us will be packing up the family and hitting the road for some well-earned time away. While bringing home souvenirs from your trip is all part of the fun, quite often you may pick up some unwanted guests on your travels, and unknowingly bring them home with you too.

Here are our Top Tips on how to avoid pests coming home with you this holiday season.

1. Ants
Ants On Food

  • Keep all foods sealed in air tight containers.
  • Avoid attracting ants to your camping area and personal belongings by storing food items in a separate area.
  • Use a broom, dust pan and brush to sweep out the caravan, camper trailer prior to heading home.

Insects like ants are ideal hitch-hikers. Migrating ants such as Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) have been able to infest soils, potted plants and hay bales, before being transported away from the area. Once ‘off-loaded’ at the new area, they can quickly establish a new colony.

2. Bed Bugs

Do you really think your suitcase couldn't pick up bed bugs?

Do you really think your suitcase couldn’t pick up bed bugs?

  • When travelling with suitcases – DO NOT PUT SUITCASES ON BEDS!! This provides an ideal opportunity for Bed Bugs to enter the suitcase. If necessary, place suitcases in the rooms wardrobe.
  • Do NOT store your suitcase under the bed, as this allows Bed Bugs easy access to enter the suitcase. If necessary, place suitcases in the room’s wardrobe.
  • Check fold out sofa beds for Bed Bugs, as these insects conceal themselves well in and around all the cracks and crevices within.
  • Check the bed, bed base and bed mattress – particularly the mattress folds and seams – for any sign of blood spotting, staining, eggs or bugs (see photo below). Discretely notify reception of any pest problems you may find.
Bed bugs found in the corner of a mattress

This is what you’re looking for – bed bugs in the corner of a mattress

3. Flies (Maggots)

  • Keep all foods sealed in air tight containers.
  • Regular rubbish removal (daily) from around campsite areas will deter fly presence and persistent activity.

4. Mosquitoes

  • Reduce your exposure time by modifying your outdoor activities
  • Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Peak mosquito activity around dusk (4 – 6 pm). Some mosquitoes prefer to attack outdoors while a few species will bite indoors, primarily biting human hosts.
  • Use personal repellents in situations where high risk of mosquito activity is expected, use of personal repellents will provide protection against these biting insect pests. Many travel medicine experts recommend repellents containing DEET.

5. Ticks/Fleas

You can still enjoy the great outdoors!

You can still enjoy the great outdoors!

  • Check everybody (adults/children/pets) including shoes and clothing when leaving high risk areas (e.g. Bushland / long grassed areas). Ticks/Fleas are ideally suited to hitching a ride on a host.
  • Pay careful attention and brush yourself off before you get into your vehicle.
  • Use personal repellents in areas of high risks and exposure to Ticks/Fleas is possible, use of personal repellents will provide protection against biting insect pests.

Follow these tips and you are much less likely to bring home those unwanted guests these holidays.

Happy travels!
